No One’s Rose #1 Review

Writer:  Emily Horn & Zac Thompson
Artist:  Alberto Jimenez-Alburquerque
Color Artist:  Raul Angulo
Letterer:  Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

How much do we take our environment for granted? We drive our gas-powered cars on asphalt roads to our jobs in buildings of concrete, steel, and glass. We labor to make our lawns greener than our neighbor’s, but not for the benefit of the lawn. How much nature do we see every day? How might our world change if, suddenly, it all collapsed? No One’s Rose is set in such a future, where all the green nature we love, and think nothing of, has vanished. Left behind is a barren wasteland full of crumbled buildings and toxic sludge – the legacy of the acidic reign of man. In this world human society lives on the brink of extinction, with a small pocket living in a domed city. Super-oxygenating trees are the lifeblood of the people living within the dome, providing shelter and security. Those with the privilege to live among the leaves at the top of the tree have life as good as it gets, but what about those who live below? Are all parts of the tree truly equal, or is there a class division even after the apocalypse?

Captain Tenn Gavrillo is a junior bioengineer who uses the science at hand to gather specimens from outside the dome and tweak their genetic structure. She wants to make plants that are hardy enough to withstand the deadly conditions outside the dome, so that one day humanity may be able to reclaim the lost earth. Captain Gavrillo believes in the structure and safety of the dome and of the society within. She may even have a shot at a job promotion and a chance at living in the canopy with the elites, despite the traitorous actions of her deceased father. Her brother, Seren, is of a different mind. He works at the bottom of the tree, in the filtration systems that make life in the dome possible. Seren sees the disparity between the canopy and the lower levels, and desperately wants to change society for the better. But just how far are he and his friends willing to go to achieve that goal?

Vault’s new series No One’s Rose is a fun post-apocalyptic sci-fi read with a great creative team behind it. Written by Zac Thompson and Emily Horn, with art by Alberto Alburquerque, and colors by Raul Angulo, this first issue is a wild ride through destruction and order.

Hellions #1 Review

Writer: Zeb Wells
Artist: Stephen Segovia
Color Artist:  David Curiel
Letterer:  Cory Petit
Cover Artist: Stephen Segovia

Hellions #1, like all of the other X-Men titles currently running, explores a particular problem created within Jonathan Hickman’s House of X/Powers of X story from Summer 2019. In this case, the problem is what to do with the mutants that have a hard time following the rules, especially Krakoa’s new laws. Naturally, Mr. Sinister jumps to their defense with a proposal on how to put them to work.

Zeb Wells approaches this book with the expectation that readers are familiar with the Dawn of X; however, his writing beyond that is friendly to X-Men fans whether they started reading last summer, or if they’ve been following since Claremont’s stories in the ’80s. The first half of this first issue acts as a sort of roll call, cluing readers in to why this particular group is assembled. Newcomers will get a grasp of what these characters’ powers and personalities are, but presented in a way that long-time readers won’t feel like it’s redundant. The second half serves more as a mission briefing, with nods at past events (including a snide remark about the name “Marauders”) that will spark nostalgia in some readers and create a recommended (though not necessary) reading list for others.

Overall, Hellions #1 creates a new iteration of the team with a new purpose, without discarding the X-Men’s past. If you’d like to dive a bit deeper into the new status quo of X-Men, especially some of the more “sinister” elements, definitely check this book out.

Outlawed #1 Review

Writer:  Eve Ewing
Artist:  Kim Jacinto
Color Artist:  Espen Grundetjern
Letterer:  Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist:  Pepe Larraz

Are we willing to give up our freedoms to be safe? Would you trade increased restrictions on parts of the population if it meant slightly increased stability? In this new Marvel comic our favorite teen heroes Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Ironheart, Nova, and more have to grapple with this serious question, and whether or not their good intentions outweigh the serious consequences of their actions. After an “incident” at a local school, politicians introduce new legislation that makes underage vigilantism illegal, and the teen superheroes that we know and love must either stand their ground or cut and run.

Tensions rise and the nation divides. As a new government task force looms the Champions must rise to meet them. One thing we can be sure of: the next generation of superheroes won’t take this one lying down. They’ll stand and fight, whether we want them to or not. Both the writing and the artwork in this issue are superb. Writer Eve Ewing, artist Kim Jacinto, and color artist Espen Grundetjurn weave their talents together to produce a fierce tapestry of light and story. Intense action scenes make it a page-turner, with huge splashes of color and movement.

At the center of the action, we’ll get to see how the changes impact the lives of two teen heroes, Miles Morales and Kamala Kahn, in their respective ongoing series. Then the two will rejoin forces along with Nova as the story continues in Champions #1 available April 8th.

Spider-Woman #1 Review

Writer: Karla Pacheco
Artist: Pere Perez (backstory: Paulo Siqueira & Oren Junior)
Color Artist: Frank D’Armata
Letterer: VC’s Travis Lanham
Cover Artist: Jung-Geun Yoon

For the first time in three years, Spider-Woman is back in her own ongoing series–and she’s got new threads for the occasion. In the first story of this giant-size issue, Jessica Drew is hired to protect the birthday party of a billionaire’s daughter. When kidnappers come, Jess puts her powers on full display, all while suffering through a persistent headache that might be from something other than the bratty kids she’s babysitting. The second story offers a segue from Drew’s activities in Strikeforce (where anyone looking for an extra dose of Spider-Woman can still find her monthly!) to how she acquired her new “work clothes” for this series.

After writing a few short stories and one-shots for Marvel, Karla Pacheco has finally been given the reins of an ongoing series. She’s joined by artist Pere Perez, and together their layouts and art make exciting action sequences without sacrificing readability. Which is great, given that the majority of their story is action. The final eight pages are a fair bit quieter, with Pacheco joined by Paulo Siqueira and Oren Junior doing pencils and ink, respectively, as we get a glimpse of a “normal” day in the life of Jessica Drew.

Spider-Woman #1 is a quick and fun read that serves as a good introduction to who Jessica Drew is, what she can do, where she is, how she got there, and why you should care about this individual with a hyphen and a “Spider” in their name. While this is a new take on the character, complete with a makeover, long-time fans can appreciate the steps taken to acknowledge Jessica’s past stories rather than disregard them. So whether you’re newly interested in Spider-Woman, or you’ve followed her since 1977, this series will appeal to you.
