Strange Adventures #1 Review

Writer: Tom King
Artists: Mitch Gerads & Evan “Doc” Shaner
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Covers: Mitch Gerads & Evan “Doc” Shaner

Who is Adam Strange? A hero? War criminal? Neither? Both? These questions drive Tom King’s latest post-modern deconstruction of the superhero genre. In the midst of a promotional book tour for his new wartime memoir, Strange finds himself at the center of a murder mystery where he is the prime suspect. Has the savior of Rann finally cracked? Or are there more sinister forces at work? A surprise, last-minute addition to the cast may have the answers. King is in his element here, taking full advantage of the miniseries format to tell a tight, suspenseful story about a lesser-known member of DC’s cosmic cast.

As for the art, this is one of the most gorgeous books on the shelves. Mitch Gerads, of Mister Miracle acclaim, once again joins King for a deeply human experience. His facial work is second to none, elegantly capturing the nuance of each emotionally charged scene. There’s a grittiness in his work that makes every panel feel perfectly grounded, even as a man soars across the sky with a jetpack.

While Gerads handles the earthbound scenes, Doc Shaner delivers all the color-popping, cosmic action you would expect from a Silver Age staple. Shaner’s lines are strikingly clean, presenting every scene in perfect detail. In many ways, Gerads and Shaner are the perfect foils, each playing to their respective strengths to build something that feels simultaneously steeped in both realism and fantasy. The result is a must-read comic that promises to be one of the year’s best.

Strange Academy #1 Review

Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Humberto Ramos
Color Artist: Edgar Delgado
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artists: Humberto Ramos and Edgar Delgado

Strange Academy’s titular institution is the Marvel Universe’s solution for young sorcerers, witches, and other mystic types looking to control their powers in the same way Xavier’s School provided a solution for “Gifted Youngsters.” The book opens up with a young girl named Emily Bright writing Doctor Strange a letter explaining her struggles with controlling her magical abilities. Shortly afterwards, she’s brought to Strange Academy where she meets her fellow classmates (introducing a large cast of new characters) and instructors (consisting of many fan-favorite magic-users).

Even considering the 40-page size of this series debut, Skottie Young packs a lot of material into the story. The school, its purpose, the characters, relationships, rivalries, and more are all established with excellent pacing, giving everything its fair share of time before naturally flowing into the next idea. Humberto Ramos’s art helps stuff even more substance into the book. The way he draws people and facial expressions gives characters unique personalities without the reader having to even look at a word of dialogue.

While it may be natural to see “magic school” and immediately draw comparisons to the adventures of a particular scarred wizard, this book separates itself well enough to feel fresh. Some mild language may keep this book out of younger hands, and though it’s targeted at a teenage audience it can certainly be enjoyed by older readers. If you have even the slightest interest in the magical elements of Marvel, this book is a must-read.

Amazing Spider-Man Daily Bugle #1 Review

Writer: Mat Johnson
Artists: Mack Chater, Francesco Mobili, and Scott Hanna
Colors: Dono Sanchez-Almara and Protobunker
Letters: VC’s Joe Carmagna
Cover: Mark Bagley and Morry Hollowell

Amazing Spider-Man: Daily Bugle #1 asks the question so many newspaper publishers are struggling with today: how does print news stay relevant in a digital age? As editor-in-chief of the Bugle, Robbie Robertson’s answer is to obtain exclusive stories through some good old-fashioned investigative journalism. He forms a team of familiar faces from the Bugle and puts them to work.

Mat Johnson’s Marvel writing debut primarily follows Peter Parker, Ben Urich, and newcomer Chloe Robertson, niece of Robbie, as they investigate various leads for the paper. Each one uncovers a mystery that could prove deadly to the people, pets, and “platyrhynchos” of New York City. The art team supports the story with panels colorful enough for a Spider-Man book, yet gritty enough for the detective feeling.

The book takes a step away from most of the super-elements of the Marvel Universe to tell a more grounded story. While seasoned readers can appreciate some of the more obscure character appearances, this introduction to a 5-part miniseries will also make newcomers feel welcome. Daily Bugle #1 is for anyone ready to ditch their cape in favor of a magnifying glass.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (2020) Review

Writer: Al Ewing

Artist: Juann Cabal

Colorist: Federico Blee

Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit

Cover: Juann Cabal & Dean White

The galaxy needs a savior. Following a series of harrowing events in Marvel’s Incoming and Annihilation: Scourge, Richard Rider a.k.a. Nova has fallen on desperate times. The Olympians have returned from beyond the grave and Nova is struggling to put together a coalition to stop them. But are the Guardians of the Galaxy willing to sacrifice their newfound peace to come to his aid?

Writer Al Ewing spins a desperate tale of responsibility versus personal desire as he probes the inner workings of Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon. The other Guardians are present, but this is primarily a Quill/Rocket story. The result is a tense and satisfying introduction to a new era for the Guardians, complete with new faces and some surprising additions.

Juan Cabal delivers some sharp art that brings the operatic nature of the book to thrilling life. His face work is solid, perfectly capturing all the emotion and depth of the story’s characters. The space battles in particular are impressively rendered, giving the book an appropriately cosmic feel. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to the series, Guardians of the Galaxy #1 delivers.
