Matchups and Winners!

CHAMPIONSHIP

#1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac vs #2 Mister miracle/ Big Barda

It all comes down to this. Good vs evil, cosmic level powers, the championship bout. It’s clear what all four of these fighters brought to the game, but how does it all play out? Lex Luthor made the opening move. he knows the New Gods, he knows them incredibly well. He goes for Barda first for two reasons; one, she is the better, stronger fighter, and two, he’s more likely to to actually hit her. His blast shoots true, dead on target, but a quick flick of her wrist with blinding reflexes and Mega-Rod in hand bats the plasma away harmlessly. Brainiac, in his cold logical hubris, tried to contain Mister Miracle in tendrils slowly writhing out from his cold, metallic body. Barda charged Luthor, but to his surprise, completely missed with her attack. The one things that the villains hadn’t counted on was the Free family’s compassion for one another. You want to know how Mister Miracle can escape from ANYTHING? With help. Barda clubbed Brainiac right in his central processors. The feint left both of the villainous geniuses disoriented while she continued to attack the both of them, striking back and forth. Her attentions split, Lex was able to finally conjure some offense and Brainiac was eventually able to restrain Barda. In the flurry of combat neither realized that they’d all but forgotten about the fourth contender, but with Barda incapacitated they need only fell Mister Miracle to claim their rightful victory. Scanning the field they both find the grounds seemingly empty. Yes, he’s a master escape artist, but where did he escape to? The answer was quickly provided as Brainiac suddenly froze, the diabolical red glow of his eyes fading to a soft blue before and a soft, “PING” emanated from his maw. The tendrils restraining Barda were immediately released and the two slowly but surely dismantled Luthor, armor and all.

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

FINAL FOUR

#5 Flash/ Kid Flash vs #1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac

The Speed Force is one of the fundamental energies of the Universe. It powers not one, but two of the heroic individuals on the battlefield. The Flashes have faced off against Rogues, Super Apes, they’ve fought super villains, they’ve fought gods. They’ve both literally escaped death itself through the Speed Force. Having faced everything before them, the Flashes stares down his opponent and worries, “Superman Villains, had to be his bad guys.” Neither Brainiac nor Lex Luthor posses even remotely close to the speed of the their opponents however what they lack in speed, they make up for in calculation. The Flash can generally move faster than the speed of though, but a mind as incredible as Luthor’s can ALMOST keep up, and an intelligence like Brainiac was JUST enough to stay ahead of the Central City sentries.

WINNER:

Lex Luthor/ Brainiac!

#5 Cable/ Deadpool vs #2 Mister Miracle/ Big Barda

Mister Miracle and Big Barda have had some BIG wins in some hard fought battles, eliminating Doctor Strange and Clea as well as Scarlet Witch and Vision. Cable and Deadpool have upset more than their fair share of enemies; in this tournament as well as in their home of Marvel 616 with back to pack wins over the House of El, beating Power Girl and Huntress in round two and Superman with Lois Lane in the third round. The big advantage that Deadpool has brought to the table is his near limitless healing factor. But once the escapees of Apokolips figured out that they could just beat Cable, and THEn they just need to score a moment of victory over Deadpool, they were able to end a very prolonged battle and move on into the championship round.

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

Elite Eight

#5 Cable/ Deadpool vs #3 Spider-Man/ Spider-Man

Even with the mask on, you could just tell that Wade had a grin on his face like Thor has in Ragnarok upon seeing his old pal Spider-Man across the field to start the match. Spider-Man has much the opposite reaction, shooting his webs with a heavy sign followed up muttering, “I hate fighting this guy.” The sentiment followed through pretty much the entire match.

WINNER:

Cable/ Deadpool!

#1 Doctor Strange/ Clea vs #2 Mister Miracle/ Big Barda

What an incredible matchup! Marvel’s mysticism parading around as science. DC’s sci-fi space “gods” parading around as mythology. The good doctor’s brought everything that they could, but they just couldn’t keep the New Gods down, every single spell, every single charm, every single enchantment, broken, slipped, or just shaken off.

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

#1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac vs #7 Nightwing/ Batgirl

Lex Luthor sneers out, “Batman’s welps.” laughing. “The association to Batman is known.” Brainiac retorts. Nightwing and Batgirl waste no time against their hated rivals. Batgirl knows a thing or two about computers. Sure Brainiac is a bit more advanced than most of the terrestrial machines she’s worked on, but the basics should be the same idea. Nightwing has felled many a foe significantly stronger than he. His unique style making it difficult to hit him, constantly keeping his opponent off guard. If the fight was fought out 100 times, the bats would surly win their fair share, but not this one, not today.

WINNER:

Lex Luthor/ Brainiac!

#5 Flash/ Kid Flash vs #2 Invincible/ Atom Eve

Flash Fact: Viltrumites are fast, but the Flash is faster. Eve put up all of the barriers, traps, and obstacles that she could, and di an incredibly admirable job giving Mark a chance to really deal some damage, but the two slippery speedsters proved too much because while Viltrumites are close to infatigable, the Speed Force really is.

WINNER:

Flash/ Kid Flash!

Sweet Sixteen

#1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac vs #12 Ant-Man/ Wasp

Seeing the malice in their opponents, the two founding Avengers shrunk to action. Without notice, a small translucent orb materialized around them and floated towards the dastardly duo. Lex grabbed the sphere inspecting it with curiosity and turned to his compatriot, nodding.

WINNER:

Lex Luthor/ Brainiac!

#6 Mister Fantastic/ Invisible Woman vs #7 Nightwing/ Batgirl

In the incredibly elusive 6/7 matchup we got to see two couples so perfectly matched with one another, so in synch, so brilliantly coordinated, even moment was truly a please to behold. The lack of powers didn’t prevent the original Bat-kids from keeping the pressure on the First Family of Marvel Comics. Every time that the FF seemed to get the upper hand, Babs would surprise them, or Dick would wriggle free somehow. As brilliant as Reed Richards is, he was unable to figure out this Dynamic duo, and they were able to put it on at the end.

WINNER:

Nightwing/ Batgirl!

#1 Doctor Doom/ Namor vs #5 Flash/ Kid Flash

The Flashes did their best to avoid Doom’s initial gauntlet blasts, he wasted no time at this point to press on the offense. Despite not being able to land a solid blow, the shots kept the Flash off balance just enough to give Namor the chance to absolutely level the Scarlet Speedster with a singe strike. Turning their attentions from the elder Flash, Doom and Namor both tried to get the remaining hero, but something inside of Wally just wouldn’t let himself lose. He eventually twisted up the villains enough to twist Namor into Doom’s sights and let Doom lay out the Prince of Atlantis. Frustrated, Doom unleashed a blast in all directions, perhaps not knowing that a Flash could vibrate around the frequency of the blast. The moment s that it took Doom to recharge were all it took for Kid Flash to dismantle the armor and incapacitate Doctor Doom.

WINNER:

Flash/ Kid Flash!

#3 Batman/ Catwoman vs #2 Invincible/ Atom Eve

Atom Eve’s incredible powers are always a feat to witness; but equally astounding is Catwoman’s agility, determination, and pure grit. The two dance around at a near stalemate while the battle was decided between their cowled counterparts. Batman is used to fighting super powered foes. He’s even bested the Man of Steel once or twice. Invincible has pretty much the same power set, just not quite as strong, not quite as many powers. Two pretty big deficits to overcome, but not quite as big as the the two things that Invincible has in his favor; Batman doesn’t have a magic rock that hurts Invincible and nobody else, and more importantly, Invincible doesn’t let Batman win.

WINNER:

Flash/ Kid Flash!

#1 Doctor Strange/ Clea vs #5 Superboy/ Robin

As incredible as Superboy’s emerging Kryptonian powers may be, and they are; Superboy is as susceptible to Magic as anyone else. And as clever as Robin can be, as tenacious, and as crafty, sometimes you just find yourself outwatched.

WINNER:

Doctor Strange/ Clea!

#3 Scarlet Witch/ Vision vs #2 Mister Miracle/ Big Barda

Okay, I’m going to level with you. If you’re actually reading all of these, here’s your peak behind the curtain. This is an absolute dream matchup. There’s just so much raw power, Scarlet Witch has such relatively undefined powers and ability to control them. Vision can also do just SOO many things, it’s hard to see them losing. But here’s the thing. The New Gods are GODS. It’s easy to forget that Mister Miracle ALSO possesses near immortality, super speed, strength, stamina, flight disks, a Mother Box, AND he can get out of pretty much anything. And Big Barda is the powerhouse of the two.

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

#3 Spider-Man/ Spider-Man vs #7 Wolverine/ Shadowcat

Even with the mask on, you could just tell that Peter had a grin on his face like Thor has in Ragnarok upon seeing his old pal Logan across the field to start the match. Logan has much the opposite reaction, popping his claws with a heavy sign followed up muttering, “I hate fighting this guy.” The sentiment followed through pretty much the entire match.

WINNER:

Spider-Man/ Spider-Man!

#1 Superman/ Lois Lane vs #5 Cable/ Deadpool

Because of course it did, this match started with Deadpool absolutely squealing with delight, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it, I’m actually here with them! I know, I know, you wouldn’t think that’d know who you are being where WE’re from and given where YOU’re from, but even in Canada I follow the news, Ms Lane, can I PLEASE have your autograph?! Hold on I think that I’ve got a pen and my autograph book somewhere in here…” Deadpool begins pulling random things from pouches tossing them on the ground, bullets, throwing stars, a pocket sized rubber chicken, etc.” Leaving the two star reporters for the Daily Planet more than a little bit confused, Cable started to open fire. Superman was able to protect Lois, catching the massive plasma blasts in the chest. While not damning for the Man of Steel, the future tech weapons did more than their fair share of damage and slowed down Big Blue just enough to let Cable roll with the first couple of punches thrown his way, all the whole Deadpool’s accessories are just piling up around him as he continues searching for his pen. Lois quietly walked over, picked up one of Wade’s weapons and without notice, pointed it at the Merc With the Mouth. Superman’s offense pushing Cable to his absolute limits, telekinesis, telepathy, and every piece of tech on his person, put them on the brink of finishing this battle when a large blast startled the two of them. They both turn to see Lois collapse, charred and smoking like a cartoon. Superman rushed to her aid while Cable pushed out everything he had into the Kryptonian’s back, felling him as he arrived at his beloved’s fallen body. Deadpool finally, snapping his fingers, and reaching up to his chin to roll up his mask, “Right, still behind my ear!” Looking around, somehow more confused than anyone was at the beginning of the battle he asks, “wait, what happened?”

WINNER:

Cable/ Deadpool!

Round Two Matchups

#1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac vs #8 Captain America/ Falcon

Lex Luthor sneered at the patriot duo across the field as his LexCorp battlesuit scanned his opponents. Cap didn’t give him the chance and tossed his mighty shield producing a loud “CLANG”, startling the business tycoon with the force, pushing him back just half a step. The rockets fired and the suit thrust the billionaire skyward. Falcon took to the sky to keep him occupied. Cap started bashing the android, shouting something in comparison to a much more familiar foe. Brainiac eked out tinny, “I have no idea who Ultron is, but I assure you, he is inferior to Brainiac.” before shrugging off Captain America, quietly turning his attention to the sky, blasting Falcon, and walking over to the felled Cap to pin him to the ground.

WINNER:

Ant-Man/ Wasp!

#12 Ant-Man/ Wasp vs #4 Iron Man War/ Machine

Three of the original Avengers squaring off with another long time ally in the fold. All four know the score. It’s hard to hit what you can’t see, but Stark’s targeting computers can hit things smaller than a bug, but the weapons don’t quite have the agility of the two heroes. As tough as the armor is, as strong as the weapons are, as technologically genius as Tony Stark is, and as adept of a pilot that Rhodey has proven himself; they weren’t prepared to have an Avenger sneak in between the plates of their armor and start messing things up.

WINNER:

Ant-Man/ Wasp!

#6 Mister Fantastic/ Invisible Woman vs #3 Green Lantern/ Green Arrow

Two of the best duos in the entire tournament in terms of personal relationship. Romantic partners vs platonic best friends. Green Lantern’s constructs not entirely dissimilar to the Invisible Woman’s force fields or Mister Fantastic’s ability to morph into any shape needed. Arrows flew, people got wrapped up, attacks hit and missed, but Reed was, as he so often does, able to figure out the source of Green Lantern’s power and slide his incredibly mailable fingers around the ring, breaking Hal’s control over it, breaking his confidence, and giving the Fantastic Family their second victory.

WINNER:

Mister Fantastic/ Invisible Woman!

#7 Nightwing/ Batgirl vs #2 Medusa/ Black Bolt

The Bat and the Bird quietly take in their opponents. The Inhuman Royal Family, never ones to underestimate their opponents made the first move, Medusa’s hair lashing out at their targets. Both of the Gotham natives deftly weave around the hair and make coordinated attacks on Black Bolt. Maneuvering around, setting their opponents up, dodging attacks, and striking when able. Their pesky batarangs and escrima sticks, while not doing a ton of damage, needling the Inhumans just enough to force them into attacking out of frustration, off target, at at one another. The acrobatic judo finally paying off with the improbable victors moving on.

WINNER:

Nightwing/ Batgirl!

#1 Doctor Doom/ Namor vs #8 Wolverine/ Honey Bader

Namor smirked at the onset of the battle. He knows the Wolverines from his time with the X-Men. Laura and Gabby lunged forward in unison, Namor responded in kind. A resounding, “Imperious Rex!” rang out across the battlefield as Namor wrestled the All-New All-Different Wolverine to the ground. Honey Badger, unimpressed, dove into the despotic Doom, scratching at his nigh impenetrable armor with her razor sharp adamantium claws before looking back to see he mother/ sister/ best friend clone twisted in knots. Doom zapped the child out cold and the Super Villain Team Up takes the round

WINNER:

Doctor Doom/ Namor!

#5 Flash/ Kid Flash vs #4 Supergirl/ Brainiac 5

Supergirl has super speed, almost as fast as a Flash. Brainiac’s 12’th level intellect is far superior to Barry’s. But never count out some of the astonishing abilities of the Speed Force. Brainiac 5’s mind, as incredible as it is, was prone to the basest of teenage flaws, hero worship. His curiosity about the Speed Force and meeting the iconic heroes gave team Flash exactly what they needed to win.

WINNER:

Flash/ Kid Flash!

#6 Green Lantern/ Green Lantern vs #3 Batman/ Catwoman

It’d be easy to be intimidated, it’d be easy to look at the power differential, it’s be easy to write off any chance that two non-powered individuals would have against not just one but TWO Green Lanterns; but these are not two normal humans. The Green Lanterns tried so hard, but they just couldn’t get over their opponents.

WINNER:

Batman/ Catwoman!

#7 Wonder Man/ Beast vs #2 Invincible/ Atom Eve

Beast tried to keep up with the uncanny Invincible, but Mark is faster, stronger, MORE agile, and WAY tougher. Ironically, Winder Man’s ionic body seems to have been a loophole in Eve’s block on using her powers to directly effect organic matter, so even with the Avengers keeping it close for a few minutes, the Guardians just kept pulling away.

WINNER:

Invincible/ Atom Eve!

#1 Doctor Strange/ Clea vs #8 Poison Ivy/ Harley Quinn

Doctor Strange and Clea quietly start to size up their opponents while the Gothamites are both a bit quicker to action. Stephen had gotten a mallet square to the nose with the retort, “Yeah yeah, I’m doctor too ya know!” While Ivy conjured plants from the ground to entire entangle Clea. Strange was out cold while Ivy slowly sauntered up to Clea, Harley just a step behind. “Any last words,” Ivy asked, allowing the vine around Clea’s mouth to slowly recoil. It proved to be her undoing, as it allowed Clea just enough freedom to utter an incantation of incineration. The fires burned, but Clea pushed past it before raising her arms with demonic tendrils from the aether constricting Harley and Ivy.

WINNER:

Doctor Strange/ Clea!

#5 Superboy/ Robin vs #13 Conan/ Red Sonja

The Hibernian warriors struck out fast, and they hit as hard as they could. They almost got the best of Superboy, aggravating the boy of steel to near submission, but the young Master Wayne was able to keep his cool, steady his approach, and methodically dismantle his more barbaric opponents.

WINNER:

Superboy/ Robin!

#6 Cyclops/ Jean Grey vs #3 Scarlet Witch/ Vision

“Feels like we’ve been fighting her our whole lives, doesn’t it?” Jean whispered to her paramour at the onset of the battle. “You’re not wrong. The Brotherhood, even the Avengers, now this.” Scott smirked and let loose an optic blast at the Scarlet Witch, knowing that it would put her off balance and let Jean start to work on the Vision. Even though he doesn’t have an organic human mind even his phased form is still susceptible to telekinesis, allowing Jean to start taking a hold of the android. They fought so admirably, they did everything right, and they came SOO close, but the Scarlet Witch’s chaos powers are so difficult to predict, to control, and to beat.

WINNER:

Scarlet Witch/ Vision!

#10 Hawkman/ Hawkgirl vs #2 Mister Miracle/ Big Barda

Hawkman let out an audible “oh fu…” before staggering back to prepare his guard from Big Barda’s immediate advance. Hawgirl spent the better of the entire match chasing the elusive Scott Free around the feild while Hawkman couldn’t get a clean shot in at all, slowly taking more and more damage until his defense finally broke, allowing Big Barda to focus her inexhaustible efforts on the next Thangarian.

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

#1 Superman/ Lois Lane vs #8 Northstar/ Aurora

The Canadian duo has such a wide array of powers; super speed, endurance, reflexes, durability, flight… all things that Superman posses himself, and all powers that Superman has just plain more of.

WINNER:

Superman/ Lois Lane!

#5 Cable Deadpool vs #4 Power Girl/ Huntress

No entirely dissimilar to how the Cable and Deadpool’s first round matchup started out, Deadpool got demolished from the start. Only these opponents were far more precise, prepared, and powerful. Not allowing Cable to sit back and devise a plan, or take anyone by surprise, Power Girl unleashed an onslaught forcing the freedom fighter from the future to remain on the defensive for most of the battle. All the while it seemed Deadpool was doing much the same, continually getting beaten by the far more focused Huntress. As Helena got increasingly frustrated that each incapacitating blow, each mortal strike, every single would-be killing technique was fully recovered and met with snark, sarcasm, and surprisingly sugary sweet statements, she finally lashed out, putting everything that she had into making sure that Deadpool wouldn’t be getting back up anytime soon. Neither of Earth 2’s World’s Finest were expecting the classic rope-a-dope. Eventually Cable’s battle hardened reflexes and experience fighting a wide array of super powered individuals gave him the wherewithal to find just the slightest opening and push out a massive broad strike psychic blast. It was a bit of a gamble, incapacitating all four heroes at once. As it turns out, a combination of Deadpool’s scrambled psyche and ridiculous healing factor allowed him to recover first scoring them the victory.

WINNER:

Cable/ Deadpool!

#6 Booster Gold/ Blue Beetle vs #3 Spider-Man/ Spider-Man

A relatively clean fight. Ted’s the smartest, but daggum Peter is close. Both the Spiders are a bit stronger, but Booster sure gives them a run for their money. Miles has his venom sting, Blue and Gold both have a ranged attack. The Spiders have their webs, but Beetle has all kinds of gadgets. This is the technical fight that we all wish we could have seen play out live, but it had to come to an end somehow, and as is oft the case, the single most underappreciated super-power in comics, the Spidey-Senses gave the Spider-Men the edge that the needed to survive and advance.

WINNER:

Spider-Man/ Spider-Man!

#7 Wolverine/ Shadowcat vs #2 Professor X/ Magneto

Mutants vs mutants, I am confident to say that there is no matchup amongst two teams that know one another better than these four. Magneto started off with a bit of a chuckle, seeing the familiar opponents before seizing control of the Wolverine. Kitty sprung into action faster than I think anyone expected phasing directly through professor X’s chair, shorting out the circuitry, using the distracting to swiftly become tangible just long enough to deliver an expert roundhouse kick directly to in Magneto’s chin. His helmet flew off and falling with a deep “thunk”. His concentration broken, there was a terrible growl that sounded something like, “Magnus,” as Logan bounded into action claws forward. Professor X tried to calm the beast but he was too far gone into a berserker rage, acting on pure instinct and never relinquishing the advantage.

WINNER:

Wolverine/ Shadowcat!

ROUND ONE MATCHUPS

#1 Lex Luthor/ Brainiac vs #16 355/ Yorrick

Yorrick has found his way out of a number of tricky situations. 355 has helped him out of more of them than I’m sure that he’d care to admit; but this was not one of them.

WINNER:

Lex Luthor/ Brainiac!

#8 Captain America/ Falcon vs #9 Fire/ Ice

Cap and Falcon have years of combat experience, both on their own AND together. While both of their power sets may seem somewhat limited; Captain America has the Super Soldier Serum, but it doesn’t make him Hulk strong just like, power lifter strong. Falcon can talk to birds, which is super cool, and has a number of practical applications outside of active combat, but without Redwing, without the rest of his spies, not much of an help in this tournament. Fire and Ice on the other hand have power to spare! They’re both Justice Leaguers! They’ve fought Doomsday to a standstill (with a bit of help from the rest of the League)! Unfortunately for them the coordinated efforts of Cap and Falcon were enough to seize the day and make the most of every opportunity.

WINNER:

Captain America/ Falcon!

#5 Aquaman/ Mera vs #12 Ant-Man/ Wasp

In the only matchup from round one of married couple vs married couple, but sets came out swinging! Aquaman and Mera both had a tremendous advantage in strength, but you can’t hit what you can’t see, and the diminutive duo outfoxed the rulers of Atlantis with their dynamic size changing ant-ics.

WINNER:

Ant-Man/ Wasp!

#4 Iron Man/ War Machine vs #13 Marco/ Alana

Iron Man and War Machine know war, but they surly know it in a very different way from marco and Alana. Marco and Alana have LIVED war. And they’re no longer fighting for just their homes, no longer fighting for just their lives, their fighting for their family. Too bad Iron Man and War Machine are fighting for something too. they’re fighting to win, and they’re playing for keeps. Marco and Alana were doomed from the start.

WINNER:

Iron Man/ War Machine!

#6 Mr Fantastic/ Invisible Woman vs #11 Nite Owl/ Silk Spectre

The poor Richards, they don’t want to be here and they surly didn’t want to draw such underpowered candidates. This couple is used to fighting Galactus.

WINNER:

Mister Fantastic/ Invisible Woman!

#3 Green Lantern/ Green Arrow vs #14 Misty Knight/ Colleen Wing

All four trained combatants. Both teams have one member with some enhanced abilities and one who’s just really good at fighting. But boy is that one power REALLY powerful. And howdy is that one good at fighter SUPER good at archery.

WINNER:

Green Lantern/ Green Arrow!

#7 Nightwing/ Batgirl vs #10 Daredevil Elektra

In what turned out to be the single most exciting match of round one; somehow pushing into DOUBLE overtime; these four were so perfectly matched, you could watch them fight forever. The grace and balance of all four. The technical skill. All four of them putting the ART in martial arts. Daredevil the only meta-human, you’d thing would have the advantage, but the Bat-gear that both Nightwing and Batgirl keep handy evened things up again. It wasn’t until Babs figured out Daredevil’s weakness to intense sound that the two were able to eek out a victory and move on.

WINNER:

Nightwing/ Batgirl!

#2 Medusa/ Black Bolt vs #15 Hack/Slash

Cas and Vlad are accustomed to taking out monsters seemingly more dangerous than they, but they were NOT prepared for Inhuman royalty.

WINNER:

Medusa/ Black Bolt!

#1 Doctor Doom/ Namor vs #16 Tony Chu/ John Colby

Shots fired, cybernetics, cibopathic abilities. All child’s play to DOOM.

WINNER:

Doctor Doom/ Namor!

#8 Wolverine/ Honey Badger vs #9 Batgirl/ Batgirl

This fight probably could have played out 100 times and ended up 50/50. Obviously the mutant mistresses of mayhem have the upper hand in terms of raw power, both possessing the extraordinary mutant healing factor, keen senses, AND adamantium laden claws as their genetic benefactor, Logan. Both Wolverines are both highly skilled, trained assassins. But both the Batgirls are too. Cass has been every bit as much as the Wolverines raised to be a fighter, and she’s had to do it with much higher stakes, lacking the supernatural healing ability. Steph is easily the brains of the four; and those Bat-gadgets make the team formidable no matter who they fought. In the end it didn’t come down to the claw, or to the healing factor; but those animal keen senses gave the Weapon X alumni just the slightest shade of an edge and they came out on top.

WINNER:

Wolverine/ Honey Badger!

#5 Flash/ Kid Flash vs #12 Absorbing Man/ Titania

No doubt that Absorbing Man and Titania came into this battle with the upper hand in strength. And they fought shockingly well together, came within a moment of victory after Absorbing man was able to trip up the younger flash with his wrecking ball. In hi hubris he tried to absorb the Flash’s power, and took in just a fraction of the Speed Force. Unfortunately, he was unable to control it and the way that it interacted with his absorbing powers, well, it wasn’t super pretty.

WINNER:

Flash/ Kid Flash!

#4 Supergirl/ Brainiac 5 vs #13 Beebop/ Rocksteady

The biggest holdup in this match was Brainy quickly recognizing that Beebop and Rocksteady were genetic hybrids of human being and wild animals and he just would not let Supergirl interfere with his studies. It was honestly pretty sad, the too poor henchmen trying their absolute hardest and coming up empty handed each time.

WINNER:

Supergirl/ Brainiac 5!

#6 Green Lantern/ Green Lantern vs #11 Power Man/ Iron Fist

The Heroes for Hire for sure had more than a handful (or an Iron Fist-full?) with the Guardians’ chosen champions. Despite their relative lack of experience and training both Lanterns were able to pull through in the clutch. The biggest limitation of the Heroes for Hire? Completely ground based; they just couldn’t keep up with the 3D combat coming from the Lanterns.

WINNER:

Green Lantern/ Green Lantern

#3 Batman/ Catwoman vs #14 Scott Pilgrim/ Ramona Flowers

Scott and Ramona are super cute. Young couple, figuring it out. Video game logic, subspace super highway and storage; all big help in Scott’s fight to prove himself to Ramona. It was not enough to defeat this iconic couple that met in 1940 and has had some of the absolute best interplay in all of comicdom and beyond.

WINNER:

Batman/ Catwoman!

#7 Wonder Man/ Beast vs #10 Archer/ Armstrong

What an interesting matchup, two functionally immortal heroes teamed up with astonishing examples of near physical perfection. Somewhat ironically, both immortals aren’t all that much for fighting. Archer fought SOO valiantly, trying to match the bouncing blue Beast, beat for beat; however a number of Ma McCoy’s boy’s moves are entirely inimitable. years of training in the danger room and a… unique physiology were too much to overcome.

WINNER:

Wonder Man/ Beast!

#2 Invincible/ Atom Eve vs #15 Ka-Zar/ Shanna

They grew up in the Jungles and rule over the wretched, nigh uninhabitable Savage Land. Constantly under threat of dinosaurs, mutates, and even the mutant master of magnetism himself, Magneto; and somehow always reigning supreme. The Lord and Lady of the Hidden Jungle, just weren’t prepared for a Viltrumite, even a young one.

WINNER:

Invincible/ Atom Eve!

#1Doctor Strange/ Clea vs #16 Sam/ Twitch

Sam and Twitch though surprisingly more adept in dealing with the supernatural than you’d expect, proved that they had too little power to deal with the Sorcerers Supreme.

WINNER:

Doctor Strange/ Clea!

#8 Poison Ivy/ Harley Quinn vs #9 Moon Girl/ Devil Dinosaur

Plants vs animals. Social science vs hard science. Pure power vs finesse. Planning and strategy vs pure chaos. This matchup could have easily gone in either direction, but in the end, as brilliant as Lunella Lafayette is, there’s just no figuring out Harley Quinn, who despite appearances, did a masterful job of figuring out Moon Girl and Devil’s plan of attack and countering with her partner effectively. Despite being just an 8 seed, this tandem shows real potential to make a big splash in the tournament!

WINNER:

Poison Ivy/ Harley Quinn!

#5 Superboy/ Robin vs #12 Hawkeye/ Hawkeye

With only one real adult on the field, you’d think that he’d have an advantage in terms of experience and maturity, but despite years on the Avengers and going toe to toe with beings like the Grandmaster and Thanos, neither Hawkeye was quite prepared for Damian Wayne

WINNER:

Superboy/ Robin!

#4 Wonder Woman/ Steve Trevor vs #13 Conan/ Red Sonja

All four contestants entered the contest with immersive combat training and experience. While Wonder Woman is by far the most powerful of the quartet, unfortunately her beloved partner was surly the weakest. Upon realizing the weakness, Red Sonja was able to manipulate Steve Trevor’s attack into the way of Diana. The shock of hurting Steve gave Conan and Sonja the moment that they needed to claim victory. If the fight had continued any longer, I’m sure that Wonder Woman would have taken over, but the Hibernian barbarians, as they’re so adept at doing, live to fight another day in the biggest upset of round one.

WINNER:

Conan/ Red Sonja!

#6 Cyclops/ Jean Grey vs #11 Captain Cold/ Heatwave

In a relatively hard fought battle, the underdogs put up as much of a fight as could be expected. Captain Cold and Heatwave both proved surprisingly difficult to manipulate mentally; perhaps constantly battling against a speedster that can move faster than the speed of though has made them mentally tougher than you’d expect, unfortunately, that was just ONE of their opponents. Cyclops was able to keep the Rogues off balance enough for Jean to just pull her assailant’s weapons away. They tried to get it done hand to hand, and the original X-Men indulged them. I don’t think that either hardened criminal was expecting the combat prowess of Cyclops and Jean Grey.

WINNER:

Cyclops/ Jean Grey!

#3 Scarlet Witch/ Vision vs #14 Wonder Twins

Jayna and Zan thought that their powers were pretty keen right up until they both inexplicably turned into the form what their twin called out. Zan, not at all prepared to become a bear was still somewhat less confused than Jayna immediately crashing as a tsunami. They were equally surprised when they were both transformed together into a bizarre aquatic centaur like seahorse. The two promptly gave up.

WINNER:

Scarlet Witch/ Vision!

#7 Rocket/ Groot vs #10 Hawkman/ Hawkgirl

It was apparent from the onset that Rocket believed there was no threat he couldn’t overcome. Facing off against not one, but two supers with the same power set, AND they’re basically just soldiers? Rocket lit up with excitement. Groot knew better, but as is often the case, was promptly ignored and too kind to not just give their all protecting their furry little friend. But there was just no way to really plan around the level of expertise, power, and experience the Thanagarians both hold.

WINNER:

Hawkman/ Hawkgirl!

#2 Mister Miracle/ Big Barda vs #15 Duncan/ Gran

They’ve faced down and defeated Grendel and his mother, Morgan Le Fay, Merlin, and the undead hoards of King Arthur; but the monster hunting duo of Duncan and his dear, sweet, incredible grandmother were just not quite enough to overcome a couple of New Gods

WINNER:

Mister Miracle/ Big Barda!

#1 Superman / Lois Lane vs #16 Betty/ Veronica

Honestly, Lois pretty much took care of business on her own while Clark stood back and admired his incredible partner!

WINNER:

Superman/ Lois Lane!

#8 Northstar/ Aurora vs Cloak and Dagger

An incredibly tough matchup between two sets of outsiders that are so wholly reliant on one another that they were both tough to overcome. Ultimately the Alpha Flighter’s experience and breadth of powers proved too much for Cloak and Dagger.

WINNER:

Northstar/ Aurora!

#5 Cable / Deadpool vs #12 Quantum and Woody

Easily the most comical matchup of Rd 1, Cable kept his cool while Woody wildly blasted Deadpool to pieces. Woody, self satisfied, let his guard down while Cable cold-cocked him, one punch, non super-powered KO. Quantum, bless his heart, held his own against a barrage of offense from Cable, but was wholly unprepared for Deadpool to regenerate and attack from behind.

WINNER:

Cable/ Deadpool!

#4 Power Girl / Huntress vs #13 Goon and Frankie

The Goon sure knows how to dish it out, and he’s definitely been slapped around on more than one occasion, but ultimately, he just didn’t have enough juice to take on a Kryptonian. I’d like to say that Frankie at least tried to help, but he was actually incapacitated from the get go; standing still, slack-jawed, drooling, and wide eyed. I think that he actually passed out before the fighting even started.

WINNER:

Power Gil/ Huntress!

#6 Booster Gold / Blue Beetle vs #11 Rogue/Gambit

In what turned out to be one of the single most exciting matchups of the first round, Blue and Gold vs Mr and Mrs X had a little bit of everything. Things started off with a bang as Remy LeBeau took the opening gambit, flipping a trio of charges towards Booster. If he’d gone for Blue Beetle first, things may have been different, because Booster’s force field was able to absorb the majority of the blast. Rogue rushed in, realizing that he was going to be the heavy hitter. Going for the only exposed skin to absorb his powers, she planted her trademark kiss, only to realize that none of his powers are well, his. It was all the opening that Beetle needed to subdue the X-Men and the two were able to press the advantage to the end.

WINNER:

Booster Gold/ Blue Beetle!

#3 Spider-Man / Spider-Man vs #14 Kick-Ass and Hit Girl

As hopeful as the two unpowered heroes were going in, as confident as Hit Girl was in their training and preparation, and as resolute as they were in their abilities; they could not land a single blow against two foes with Spidey-Sense. Miles had them both webbed up within the first couple of minutes.

WINNER:

Spider-Man/ Spider-Man!

#7 Wolverine / Shadowcat vs #10 Hellboy/ Liz Sherman

In a battle for the ages, Logan and Hellboy, without much fanfare, started tearing one another apart. The Right Hand of Doom being a surprisingly effective defense against Wolverine’s adamantium claws. While the two tussled, the real MVP, Kitty Pryde, was able to fully evade the onslaught of Liz’s pyrokinesis. Her biggest limitation, needing to hold her breath while phased, became her biggest strength, as years of training allowed her to prevail against her foe before teaming up with Logan to overpower Hellboy.

WINNER:

Wolverine/ Shadowcat!

#2 Professor X/ Magneto vs #15 Rick/ Michonne

Well. One pair came in with the ability to read minds and the ability to control metal. One pair came in with a gun and a sword. Quote of the match, “I almost feel sorry for them Charles, almost.”

WINNER:

Professor X and Magneto!
